Book Resources
Our church library is filled with resources to help us with our faith walk! Here are some book recommendations from Keith that you may want to check out!
Why Trust The
Bible?
This book addresses one of the key questions that every believer and even those considering following Jesus needs to consider: is the Bible trustworthy? Greg Gilbert provides helpful historical and theological arguments, in an accessible presentation, for why we can know and trust that the pages of Scripture are God’s word.
Can WeTrust
The Gospels?
Peter Williams creatively adds to already strong evidence for the historical reliability of the gospel accounts. In a very accessible presentation, Williams discusses topics such as apparent contradictions, direct quotations, undesigned coincidences, and identifies some interesting geographical notes. This is a good resource to help inform your confidence in the historicity of Scripture.
The Insanity
of God
Devastated after the loss their son on the mission field and seeing the virtual elimination of Christians in Somalia, Nik Ripkin returned home questioning the sovereignty of God. Nik toured the world and visited persecuted believers. Their incredible stories will help you see how “the reproach for the sake of Christ [is better than anything this world has to offer]” (Heb 11:26).
Making Sense
of God
Keller looks at the competing narratives of Christianity and Western secularism for six givens of human life and shows how “Christianity’s unsurpassed offers—a meaning that suffering cannot remove, a satisfaction not based on circumstances, a freedom that does not hurt but rather enhances love”, etc, is the longing that the secular West is truly seeking.
The Gospel
Comes with a
House Key
This volume describes a life of hospitality shaped by the gospel. Rosaria and her husband, Kent, do not just theorize about Christian hospitality, they live it. In an artistic combination of narrative and theological reflection she serves the church by offering their lives as an example of what Christian hospitality can look like in our post-Christian culture.
The Treasure
Principle
This book helps us wrestle with a central discipleship question: what do we do with the money with which we are entrusted? 15 percent of the recorded teaching of Jesus in the Gospels has to do with money and possessions. The basic premise of the book is that we all need to undergo a paradigm shift with regard to money and Alcorn helps the believer see what that looks like through the lens of Scripture.
Love Thy Body
Pearcey’s goal is to help the Christian to be able to “engage intelligently and compassionately on all of today’s most controversial moral challenges”. She does this by exposing the core principles of the secular worldview and shows how they are based on a fragmented view of the human being. This view, which she illustrates quite clearly, has formed the basis of the hookup culture, abortion, transgenderism, homosexuality and other pertinent challenges of our day.

The Secret
Thoughts of an
Unlikely Convert
In this memoir, you read about a former outspoken LGBT activist and English professor who experiences a “train wreck” conversion. Rosaria beautifully considers the invitation and demands of God in the gospel. Not only does her story offer insights into how we can love and engage with our LGBT neighbours but it reminds us of the radical call of discipleship.
Openness
Unhindered
This book brings excellent Biblical clarity to the issues of same-sex marriage, sexual orientation, gender identity, and ‘gay’ Christian. It will help you navigate the conversations relating to these issues in our present time. Rosaria writes with wit, clarity and love. Without question, this is a book that I will find myself picking up regularly for reference.
A Practical
Guide to Culture
The authors identify major cultural influences which are shaping youth today. They helpfully address pornography, the hookup culture, sexual orientation and other pertinent topics of our day. Finally they provide sound counsel to help shape a Biblical worldview in our children and youth. This volume is recommended for parents and youth leaders.
Parenting
Reading this book did two things for me: first, I was convicted by the many failures and shortcomings in my parenting; second, the book made me so hopeful because it was not a motivational book of “here’s how you can do better”, but Tripp points us to the grace of God in Christ. This is a must read for parents wanting to disciple our children in the gospel and raise them in the light its transforming power.
12 Ways Your
Phone is Changing
You
Tony Reinke serves the church in our present time by identifying ways that our phones are shaping our lives, whether we recognize it or not. He takes a balanced view in his observations and prioritizes what all these things mean to us as disciples of Jesus Christ. This book helps to you take a step back and think a bit about the influence of your phone in your life.
Church History
101
Are you interested in a concise overview of church history? This small book provides a summary of key events and introduces you to notable individuals in the history of the church. Each chapter is only a few pages in length and is helpful to brush up on your familiarity with church history or can serve as an introduction if you have little or no knowledge of the subject.
This is Our Time
In this volume Trevin Wax helpfully identifies a number of cultural myths and tendencies by which 21st century Christians habitually shaped. He exposes the deficiencies while contrasting them with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Filled with applicable personal anecdotes and unique history lessons, this book is a rich resource to help us live faithfully in our time.
Gladys Aylward
An easy read that will inspire and challenge you. Gladys, a missionary candidate considered unfit for the mission field, was determined nevertheless to follow the Lord to spread the gospel in China. The way in which Jesus led her will inspire and surprise you. Pick up this volume to read how God used this missionary ‘misfit’ mightily in China.
