Midweek Wake-Up, September 19th, 2018
This morning as I walked to church, across the St Vital Bridge, I was struck by the early morning view. The sun shone brightly over the river, calm as glass, displaying an incredible reflection of the golden leaves, shimmering on the water. As I stopped for a few moments, to take in the view, and marvel at the beauty of God and the truth of the gospel, I reflected on the thought that belief in the gospel makes the view even grander. A delight to be at play in the fields of the Lord, in the middle of the bridge.
As we think about discipleship, we think on the idea that we’re called to live as a follower of Christ, and to invite others into this relationship. The tie-in being, that as we delight in the wonder of the gospel, and play in the fields of the Lord, the proclamation of the excellencies and the beauty of Christ will spill forth.
As Jared Wilson states “the grand design of gospel proclamation, then, is gospel enthralment, or gospel enjoyment”. Interesting thought to think about? As we think upon being equipped for the ministry of evangelism and sharing our faith, Wilson seems to tell us, that one of the great resources we have is to be enthralled by the beauty of the gospel. Then out of this enthralment, we invite others into this delight of playing in the fields of the Lord. Inviting them into gospel enjoyment.
Nehemiah 8 appears to give us this picture. God’s people, hearing God’s Word, being broken by their sin, and captivated by the God, they celebrate. Enjoying great food and drink, they invite others into this gospel celebration.
This morning NSC, as you enjoy another beautiful fall morning, with the tapestry of colorful leaves adorning our city, may you richly enjoy the gospel. May this stem from a deep beholding of the glory of God who has rescued us, having this joy spill over to gospel proclamation, inviting our city to come and play in the fields of the Lord!!
