Recently I was struck by Kathy Keller’s comment, referring back to her decision to follow Christ and what it meant to grow into that decision.  At one point Keller writes “I knew God was real, I had encountered Him in every way possible, except through Scripture”.  This led to her seeking the authority of Scripture for what it meant for her life.  Quite a striking comment realizing that we can be followers of Christ, while not having encountered His words to us in Scripture.

Perhaps, knowing our susceptibility in this area, this is why Paul writes in 1st Timothy 3:14-15 “I write these things to you, hoping to come to you soon.  But if I should be delayed, I have written so that you will know how people ought to act in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.”

One of these areas, I believe for Paul, was how the church functioned together as the congregation, and it’s leaders being Deacons and Elders.  Always as Scripture reminds us, recalling that we exist as the bride of Christ to display the glory of God to the world around us.

Scripture would appear to remind us, as we heard on Sunday, that when the leader’s authority is used with the consent of the congregation for the good of the congregation, the church flourishes as God builds His church, which is an act of God’s grace and kindness towards us.  And all of this being for the sole purpose of displaying the glory of God!

NSC, I pray that we will know the joy of such a partnership in the bride.  That we’ll be led by those who labor hard and diligently to shepherd this body by the authoritative truth of God’s Word (1st Timothy 5:17).  Then in joy, we’ll follow that leadearship, as the leaders seek to guard the souls for which they’ll give an account (Hebrews 13:17).  And as a result, God’s glory will be on display for all to see!!
