Go to all sermons...

One can only imagine what went through the minds of the readers of James letter to the churches.  Do we have more faith than the demons?  Where does he get off asking us a question like that?  And then giving the example of a prostitute as a godly woman.  Asking us if our lives would validate our faith in the same way that a prostitute’s did?  Who is this guy?  Even if he had just written about judgments based on appearances.  Perhaps the reason that this book has produced no shortage of controversy over the years.

Really leaves us with one question to ask ourselves as we read the letter of James.  Do I get offended hearing these questions?  Or do I hear them as the hand of a loving Father who cares deeply for me, making sure that I really do know and love His Son?  I believe it’s a crucial question, so don’t run from it too quickly.  Have I submitted to God’s Word regarding salvation and obedience, and whether or not my life validates what I claim to believe?  Or am I ignoring what God is saying because I want to set the rules and boundaries?  It’s a worthwhile task to ask ourselves this question.

And as we do, I leave you again with the three questions that James posed to us on Sunday, aiding us in determining whether our faith is counterfeit or not.

Have I risen about the faith of the demons?
Does my life validate my faith?
Is my faith alive or dead?

NSC, may you hear them this morning, as words from a Father who loves you deeply, longing for you to know the joy and freedom of your salvation!
