Midweek Wake-Up, June 6th, 2019
Good Morning NSC! As you begin your day, if it’s like mine, I suspect that several questions have already popped into your head. Will this beautiful weather continue on for more than a day or two? Will those meetings at work, derail or energize me? Could the Raptors actually beat the Warriors? What should I have for lunch today? How will the children fare in their final exams this year? Will my finances hold up for another year?
And while some of these questions, may be more important than others, they still pale in comparison to the most important question that you and I will ever answer. The question that not only declares what we believe to be true, but becomes the basis and the foundation for all we do in life, and for how we live – even the way we walk through the many other questions that confront us and flow through our heads each day. It’s the same question that Jesus asked his disciples one day, amidst the background of paganism and idolatry in Caesarea Philippi.
Amidst that background, with the swirling popular opinions and ideas of who Jesus was, even the opinions coming from the church, he looks them in the eye and asks them: ‘But who do you say I am?’ To which Peter responds, ‘You are the Christ.’
NSC, this is the question we must all answer because it will determine our lives, and even what we believe the Messiah is. As we read this week, we find that Peter was still confused on what it meant that Jesus was the Messiah.
So here’s my encouragement to you this morning. Ask yourselves, that question, who do you say Jesus is? Then read Mark 8:31-9:1 (our passage for this Sunday) and ask yourself, is this a call to a radical few, or the call to the normal Christian life?
