Paul writes in Romans 1:16 that “he is not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God to save everyone who believes”.  Occasionally I find myself asking how much I actually believe this truth?  As we’ve heard about the reality of the abortion issue the past few weeks, hearing the alarming stats of children being killed while still in the womb, hearing about the incredibly painful and lonely journey this can be for women and men involved, wondering how we respond as a church, it can be easy to feel despair.  Or to wonder what really can we do?

I think this does bring it back to a belief in the gospel, and what ultimately we believe.  If it’s correct that the way to the greatest cultural transformation and political impact is through the preaching of the gospel, that is our calling as the church.  Which then means we need to believe that the way through the despair and hopelessness we see, is the power of the gospel to save those who believe, and to actually believe this is the power of the gospel.

We do need to be a center of grace that holds out the incredible truth of forgiveness and mercy and kindness.  But we will only understand the depths of that, for everyone, if we understand the gospel is the power to save and to heal.

C. Ben Mitchell writes: “the fortunes of the Christian church are not dependent on the moral health of Canada, but the moral health of Canada is dependent on the fidelity of God’s people, living, worshiping, and serving as God’s people”.

May we be that people this week.  Living with a belief in the gospel to save and to heal; worshiping and serving this living God; extending grace and mercy to a culture that has lost it’s way; all stemming from our belief that transformation will come from a preaching of the gospel.

That’s my prayer for us NSC, as we begin our day!
